The Value of AI in Managing Prostate Cancer

According to the American Cancer Society, 1 in 8 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during their lifetime. In 2022, they estimate there will be approximately 268,490 new cases of prostate cancer diagnosed and over 35,000 deaths. In addition, prostate cancer is the second most common cancer in men. These statistics are significant and have us asking what is being done to promote awareness, assist in early detection and support those affected by the disease.

September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, offering an opportunity to look beyond the statistics and focus on real-world scenarios for impacting patient care. This week’s Domain Knowledge explores the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in diagnosing and managing prostate cancer.

When cancer is detected early, treatment can be more effective, and survival rates increase. Artificial Intelligence Program Helps Detect Prostate Cancer highlights the use of AI in identifying prostate cancer. This is the first AI tool in pathology and is used to get a second opinion on tissue from biopsy slides. As a result, more timely and accurate cancer diagnoses can save lives.

Diagnosing and treating prostate cancer is a complex process that involves assessing information from many data sources and is often open to subjectivity. A Systematic Review of Artificial Intelligence in Prostate Cancer looks at the use of AI in recognizing complex data relationships and managing large data sets. The use of AI can reduce subjectivity and improve overall efficiency and accuracy in prostate cancer diagnosis and management.

Assessing the bigger picture as to the value of AI in prostate cancer, The Global Research of Artificial Intelligence on Prostate reviewed a total of 2,749 AI-related prostate cancer articles. The authors concluded that AI has broad application in prostate cancer, and noninvasive diagnosis and accurate minimally invasive treatment through deep learning technology will be a focus for the future.
