How Will AI Change the Landscape of Women’s Health?

Artificial intelligence is introducing new solutions to address the challenges women face in managing their health. Notable, breast cancer is one of the most prevalent and deadliest forms of cancer, primarily impacting women. As more AI solutions enter the fold, what will the future of women’s healthcare look like?

This week’s Domain Knowledge addresses that question, exploring AI and the changing landscape of women’s health. AI improves healthcare processes, and continued developments are being made to introduce tools to manage the unique health concerns specific to women. 

There are many reasons why breast cancer is tricky to navigate, even with modern technology. Battling breast cancer starts with early detection through routine screenings, but breast density and limitations of imaging methods can be significant obstacles. Mammography has been the standard for breast screening since the 1960s and has continued to evolve technologically. Today, 3D mammography and contrast-enhanced mammography improve the accuracy and efficiency of readings with the help of AI, resulting in reduced recall rates and less stress on radiologists and patients.

Supplemental screening methods have also been bolstered through AI. Breast ultrasounds have enhanced detection for women with dense breast tissue and are detecting easy-to-miss lesions. Ultrasound technology has the potential to revolutionize breast screening as image quality continues to improve. Mammography will remain the mainstay as an initial assessment, with ultrasound and MRI readings for women with dense breast tissue or those referred for further diagnostic ultrasound examination after a routine mammogram.

Additionally, cervical cancer care is benefiting from AI tools. Though pap smears were a revolutionary testing method when introduced, the deployment of healthcare AI allows for considerably more efficient diagnostic results. Higher testing capacity and faster patient turnaround time are significant steps toward effectively eliminating cervical cancer deaths.
