Future of AI in Cancer Care

Future of AI in Cancer Care

AI has emerged as a tool to improve cancer care. While there is no shortage of new AI technology in healthcare, education and integration take time and the path forward changes often. Even when progress feels slow, AI is helping reduce medical errors and improve workflow in cancer detection and treatment. What will the future of oncology look like as AI becomes more prevalent? This week’s Domain Knowledge explores ways AI will transform our approach to cancer care.

AI is currently improving cancer care in many different ways, some of which include detection, characterization, and treatment. Regardless of the approach, the goal is generally to use technology to find new ways to improve efficiency and make resources available to more people.

Breast cancer detection is most commonly associated with mammograms, but ultrasounds have become increasingly useful with the help of AI-assisted image recognition. A recent study shows that AI can be used to predict breast cancer risk from normal ultrasound images. New technological capabilities like this open up the door for more patients to be evaluated with simpler imaging methods.

Going beyond medical imaging, AI is being utilized to identify tumor cells at a single-cell level, taking characterization to a molecular level. This is a great example of why it’s so difficult to predict the future of healthcare AI, who knows what will be developed tomorrow – useful solutions are being introduced all the time.

From the treatment perspective, AI is aiding in research to prescribe more personalized chemotherapy dosing for cancer patients. Chemotherapy takes a toll on patients and can have severe side effects for some. With the help of AI, clinical data can be used to identify patients who will benefit from low-dose treatment, saving patients from detrimental side effects and saving valuable resources.

That’s a wrap for this week’s review of news and happenings in the healthcare AI space. In closing, I’ll leave you with an invitation to learn more about the benefits of using an AI Hub to manage multiple applications across your clinical needs and offer you a personal demo of Ferrum’s platform and growing AI catalog.
